For more than 25 years, KnollTextiles and Knoll have demonstrated
a commitment to sustainability in producing products for the workplace.
Corporate Initiatives
Following are just a few of their many corporate initiatives to
promote sustainability. For more detailed information, download
the Knoll Environmental, Health and Safety Annual Report at knoll.com.
ISO 14001
All Knoll North America facilities (Grand Rapids, Muskegon, East
Greenville and Toronto) are ISO 14001 certified, an internationally-recognized
mark of commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The
standard, set by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO), helps an
organisation to control and improve the impact of its activities
on the environment. Examples include developing pollution prevention
programs and reducing air and water pollution.
Recycling
Knoll are committed to reduce, reuse, recycle and where possible,
eliminate waste. Key metrics include:
- In 2005, Knoll facilities recycled over 17,845 wood pallets,
3221 tons of wood scrap, 636 tons of corrugated cardboard, 22,372
gallons of waste solvent, 11,158 gallons of waste oil and 130
tons of textiles (recycled textiles are used for insulation in
cars). Knoll also recycled virtually 100% of all aluminum and
steel scraps generated during manufacturing.
- In 2005, Knoll recycling efforts had the following impact on
the conservation of natural resources:
- through paper, steel and aluminum recycling, we saved over
12,000 trees, enough energy to light
- over 9 million 60 watt bulbs for more than a day, and enough
to run 6 million TV sets for three hours.
LEED and the USGBC
In addition to working with clients to achieve LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for sustainable
design, Knoll is committed to working to certify its own facilities.
Knoll has achieved LEED Silver certification in its San Francisco
showroom as well as LEED Gold certification for its Lubin Manufacturing
Facility in East Greenville, PA. Environmental Initiatives.
Materials
KnollTextiles is committed to sourcing products with recycled content
and natural fiber, as well as products that are made using clean
production processes.
Fiber Content: Recycled Content or Rapidly Renewable Materials
40% of the KnollTextiles fabric line has either recycled content
or rapidly renewable materials and may contribute to LEED certification
in these categories (see LEED matrix at knolltextiles.com for a
complete list).
The KnollTextiles “green bar” on tickets can be found
on a more limited selection of the line (20%); it is reserved for
those products that meet these more stringent criteria: 49%+ recycled
content or 75%+ natural materials. Attached is a complete list of
KnollTextiles “green bar” fabrics.
Clean Production Processes: Solution Dyed Fibers
KnollTextiles also sources products that are made using clean production
processes, resulting in less pollution and energy waste. Solution-dyed
products, which minimize waste water, include panel fabrics Clarity,
Harmony, Progression, Progression Striate, Resolution and Weave
Three; all of our olefin wallcoverings, and the upholstery fabric
Gala.
Product Certification
As part of our commitment to third-party monitoring to ensure impartiality
in environmental compliance, Knoll has received Greenguard certification
on over 95% of the KnollTextiles line. Exceptions include Imago
and some of their wallcoverings (Aperture, Adaptation, Cotton Paper,
Troy, Astria, Pause, Command, Exurban, Merge, Filter, Switch, Notion,
Leda). Certification is indicated on all fabric tickets.
The Greenguard Environmental Institute is an industry independent
testing program for low-emitting products and materials. Certified
products are regularly tested to ensure that their chemical and
particle emissions meet acceptable pollutant guidelines and standards.
